This bulletin provides information related to the identification and correct wiring of the SMCH (version 1 & version 2) junction boxes. This bulletin is issued to make sure the user is AWARE & PAYS CAREFUL ATTENTION to the version of SMCH being installed as the TWO VERSIONS ARE WIRED DIFFERENTLY. Wiring or installing an SMCH incorrectly CAN result in inconsistent camera performance or non-performance altogether.

Why The Two Versions

  • The SMCH Version 1 has a GREEN circuit board and was wired in the same manner as the SMC2. A total of 99 were made of version 1.
  • The SMCH Version 2 was created based on customer feedback: the wiring order was changed to match the 568B standard and the SMCH with the BLACK board.

Issues Installing the SMCH Version 1, Green Circuit Board

  • The standard documentation that we provide with our equipment does not match up with the SMCH Version 1, GREEN circuit board.
  • The SMCH version 1, GREEN circuit board, was supposed to have been shipped with a wiring diagram label in the box cover; this has been reported missing in a few instances.
  • The orange and orange/white wires are reversed in the wiring diagram if wired per the wiring diagram in SMCH, version 1, GREEN circuit board.

SMCH Version 2, Black Circuit Board

We have had reports from the field of connectivity issues. After conducting internal tests and comparing parts from different vendors, we have elected to use a different vendor for the terminal blocks.  The new blocks are easier to snap onto the board and provide superior connectivity compared to the old blocks. All future SMCHs will be shipped with the new terminal blocks.

Functions of the SMCH Junction Box

The SMCH Junction boxes are located and installed near each GRIDSMART camera. The SMCH junction boxes are the network connection point for the camera and the GS2 processor.  The units also provide an increased level of surge protection.

How to Effect This Update

An option for any distributor with SMCH Version 1 in inventory is to create an RMA by either sending an email to [email protected] or calling 1-866-652-5347. GRIDSMART will replace the unit with either a SMCH Version 2 or an SMC2 depending on your preference. Serial numbers for SMCH version 1 units:

Each distributor that has been shipped an SMCH within the last 60 days will receive a new terminal block for each unit, at no cost. Out of an abundance of caution, our recommendation is to remove the existing terminal blocks from any SMCHs currently in inventory and replace them with the new terminal blocks.

The other way to prevent these issues from arising is to have your employees and anyone installing the units in the field aware of the two different versions of SMCH and how each version should be correctly wired.
